End Horse Slaughter

The Slaughter of America’s Horses is not an easy issue to discuss, nor is it an easy one to stop.   The Agriculture Industry with all it’s power and wealth is keeping the pressure on the politicians, telling them of the great importance to our economy the killing of our horses for human consumption abroad is.  The foreign buyers are hungry for the meat of our animals, they want our horses.  They will Not get mine, or any that we rescue and adopt out as we have strict guidelines pertaining to adopting horses from our rescue.  No horse that passes through our gates will legally go to slaughter.

Approx. 90,000 horses were processed for their meat in the US last year and sold to clients across the sea and thousands more were sold live to be shipped overseas or to Canada or Mexico to be processed in those countries for the same horrible use.  These horses, a large number of which are stolen but the majority of which are purchased by “Killer Buyers” across the country at local auctions and classified sales as well as the large auctions that happen across the country, used to be Pets, Race Horses, Polo Ponies, Pony Rides, Trail Horses, Dressage Competitors, Hunter Jumpers, Barrel Racers, Reigning Horses and so on.  The pro-slaughter advocates will tell you that “the Horses that they slaughter are sickly and infirm and need to be put down anyway”, well don’t believe it, while it is true that those types of animals do pass through the auctions it is also true that most of the animals that are slaughtered are perfectly healthy young Horses that would have many years of giving pleasure to a loving owner left in them if they hadn’t been killed.  The “Killer Buyers  get paid by the pound and a healthy horse is worth far more than a sickly underweight one.  The European buyers also love the flesh of the tender young Horses, so again not sickly and not too old.  The young and the strong are the top money getters as witnessed by the higher prices the “Killer Buyers” will pay for these Choice Animals.

Legislation is currently getting ready to be voted on in Congress, although it will probably be softened before it finally nears a final vote.  Every little bit helps and if you will contact your Congressman and Senators and tell them that you want them to support Anti-Horse Slaughter Legislation of any kind it will be a start.  We could then build on that legislation and get stronger legislation passed after we can change some more political mindsets.
